Standard: ELA.8.R.1.1
Analyze how setting, events, conflict, and character development contribute to the plot in a literary text.
Eight grade students are expected to analyze with more depth and complexity than in 6th or 7th grade. They don’t just identify story elements—they must explain how those elements interact to move the plot forward.
-
Setting → How the time/place shapes decisions, obstacles, and outcomes.
-
Events → How each event builds tension and leads to the climax/resolution.
-
Conflict → Both external (battles, disasters, society) and internal (fear, doubt, morality).
-
Character Development → How characters change in response to conflict and setting.
-
Plot → The entire arc—how all elements interconnect.
